What I Mean by the Dissident Right

A working definition, for readers of my essays.

I use the term in almost every essay I publish here, and I have never stopped to say what I mean by it. That is a debt worth paying, because the term has become a canvas. Opponents fill it with whatever they wish to attack. Adherents wear it as an identity marker, often without examining the contents. Readers fill the remaining space with their own pictures. A word that everyone defines privately organises nothing, so here is my working definition for these essays.

The dissident Right is not a party, a doctrine or an aesthetic. It is a landscape: a disparate collection of individuals, organisations and entire movements standing outside the mainstream Right. The mainstream Right in most Western countries is liberal-conservative, occasionally social-conservative. It argues about tax rates and immigration volumes, but it accepts the deeper premises of the liberal order: the autonomous individual as the basic unit, the market as the measure of value, formal equality as the horizon, the nation as an administrative container.

What unites the dissident landscape, across all its internal quarrels, is that it does not buy that worldview. Three convictions mark the boundary.

First, community before the abstract individual. A human being is born into a people, a language, a place and a line of ancestors, and cannot be understood apart from them. An ethnocultural community is not a social construction awaiting deconstruction but a reality worth defending.

Second, hierarchy and difference as natural and, rightly ordered, good. People differ, some things are better than others, and every living whole, a family, a craft, a state, has an order of parts. The dream of a world without order always delivers a world with a different order, usually a worse one, hidden behind egalitarian language.

Third, politics should follow a natural order rather than manufacture one. Where the reigning ideal treats society as raw material for social engineering, design taming nature, the dissident Right holds that law and institutions must be fitted to the grain of human nature and to the concrete people they govern. Politics is the art of ordering what exists, not of replacing it with what a planner can imagine.

The word dissident is the other half, and it is structural rather than stylistic. These people and projects operate outside the approval of official institutions, and often against their active resistance. Their accounts get closed, their venues cancel, their names carry professional cost. Dissidence in this sense is not a pose anyone chose for its edge. It is a position assigned by the institutions themselves, and it shapes everything about how such movements must build, which is what this publication is about.

Inside the boundary, disagreement is the norm. The landscape contains Christians, pagans and the indifferent, electoral optimists and metapolitical patients, free marketeers and corporatists, and people who would not last an evening at each other’s dinner tables. The term describes a terrain, not a membership card, and nobody successfully polices its borders. When I write “the dissident Right”, I am pointing at the whole terrain, including the parts I argue with.

For honesty’s sake: I write from a particular place in that landscape. I call my own position radical Right, nationally oriented, and radical in the original sense of going to the root, not in the tabloid sense of going to extremes. But these essays are not about my position. They are about what the entire terrain must learn to do.

Why define the term at all? Because this publication argues that movements need shared language before they can share work. Definitions are infrastructure, unglamorous and load-bearing.

So this article will sit here as a reference, linked once from each essay, doing its quiet job.

This is what I mean by the dissident Right: the people who have stopped asking the liberal order for permission, and who now face the harder task my essays describe, building something of our own.
